surface charge properties of zirconium dioxide

چکیده
zirconium dioxide, commonly known as zirconia, is an interesting material and is receiving growing attention due to its excellent mechanical properties. the solid was characterized for surface area measurements, scanningelectron microscopy (sem), energy dispersive x-ray diffractometry (edx) and potentiometric titrations. surface titrations were carried out at the temperature range 303 to 323k in the presence of different concentrations (0.1, 0.01 and 0.001mol/dm3) of nano3 as a background electrolyte. surface charge density and point of zero charge (pzc) of zro2 were determined from the titration data. salt addition method was also applied to measure the pzc of the solid. the surface charge densities of zro2 were observed to increase with increase in temperature but decrease while increasing the concentration of electrolyte. further, the pzc was found to decrease with the rise in temperature. however, it was found to increase with increase in concentration of the background electrolyte. the thermodynamic parameters such as δh and δs were also determined from the slope and intercept of the linear plot of (phpzc - ½ pkw) versus reciprocal temperature (1/t). the values of both the δh and δs were found to be negative, while that of δg were positive. from these thermodynamic parameters, it was suggested that the protonation / de-protonation process of zro2 is non-spontaneous.

متن کاملThe visible spectrum of zirconium dioxide, ZrO2.
The electronic spectrum of a cold molecular beam of zirconium dioxide, ZrO(2), has been investigated using laser induced fluorescence (LIF) in the region from 17,000 cm(-1) to 18,800 cm(-1) and by mass-resolved resonance enhanced multi-photon ionization (REMPI) spectroscopy from 17,000 cm(-1)-21,000 cm(-1). The LIF and REMPI spectra are assigned to progressions in the Ã(1)B(2)(ν(1), ν(2), ν(3))...

Surface charge of mixtures of lepidocrocite and i\lite determined by adsorption of potentia l-determining and electrolyte ions is studied as a functi on of pH and NaCI concentration. Deviations between results oblained by both methods were a fu nction of the ill ile content of the mixtures, and can be mainly attributed lO coatings of hydroxyalum inium compl exes on the constant charge surfaces ...

PURPOSE Zirconia is a good candidate material in the dental field. In this study, we evaluated biological responses against a zirconia drill using a bone cavity healing model. MATERIALS AND METHODS Zirconia drills, stainless steel drills, and the drilled bone surface were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), before and after cavity preparation. For the bone cavity healing model, th...
متن کاملRadioactive potential of zirconium-dioxide used for dental applications.
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to investigate the possible radioactive potential of zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) dental ceramics. Such information is necessary since they became an integral part of routine prosthetic rehabilitations and devoid of scientific information about their radioactivity creates some concern in the dental community. METHODS Four different types of commercial ZrO2 ce...
